A few 200 million farmers have remaining behind their loved ones and fields in order to forge a living within China’s booming towns. The phenomenon has been described as the greatest internal migration within the history of the world.

Wu Dexiu is amongst these migrants. She and her hubby, Tang Qiqing, still left their village within Anhui province nine years ago to make money in Shanghai. Their two children stayed behind and experience their grandma and grandpa.

Wu washes houses for. Your ex income in the city is five times higher than it would be within the country side.

“I don’t mind working a little bit harder to generate money, ” she shares. “I would like my children to get whatever city kids have. I’ll buy them whatever they ask for. I haven’t yet bought them AUDIO players, cell phones or a computer, but I would like to. ”

But a recent trip home during a holiday illustrates just how hard Wu’s every day life is.

Wu’s children, Tang Deyun, 14, and Tang Shanshan, nineteen, are proud of her. But they even remember the way they didn’t want their mother to leave — and exactly how difficult it was when she do.

“We cried, ” states Tang Deyun. “We were very sad. ”

Wang Jinan and Tang Zhenkun, Wu’s mother-in-law and father-in-law, have already been looking after their two granddaughters. That is a common arrangement here; almost half the village has gone towards the cities to get work.

The family wishes Wu and her husband could come back home. But the reality, they say, could be that the family would have no money if the couple didn’t work in the town.

The particular happiness from the family’s reunion face masks months of hard work and separation. The particular countryside is becoming a place for the very old or perhaps the very younger, and no 1 in the Tang loved ones wants their children to grow up to become maqui berry farmers.
